Been There Done That: Veet Ready-to-Use Wax Strips

Veet Ready to Use Wax Strips

I use the Face Veet Ready-to-Use Wax Strips on a monthly basis, so I thought I would give the Legs & Body Veet Ready-to-Use Wax Strips a try. I get great results with my upper lip peach fuzz :). However, I was kind of disappointed with the outcome of my Legs & Body Veet Ready-to-Use Wax Strips adventure.

Veet Ready to Use Wax Strips

What's so great about ready-to-use waxing strips is just that. They are ready-to-use. I love them because you just rub the waxing strips, peel them apart, place them on hair and pull. I decided to test the strips on my legs. I have very thin leg hair. In fact, I could go months without shaving and you would think I have legs as hairy as a Sphynx kitten.

So on a quiet Saturday, I used the waxing strips and expected great results. I was left with no hair pulled and sticky legs. I tried it again and again. Nothing happened. I still had hairy legs. I then jumped in the shower and shaved my legs. Nothing beats a good old razor, ay?

Have you ever used the Veet Ready-to-Use Wax Strips? How do you get rid of hair on your legs?

Nude-Colored Nails: Knock Out Cosmetics 'Plaster'

I've never been a fan of matte nail polish. A good clean shine is what works for me. This color is Plaster by Knock Out Cosmetics and it's got a matte sheen. It's a lacquer I snagged at one of my beauty internships and I finally got the chance to try it out. The color is rich and my nail looks like a mannequin's leg, which makes sense as to why it's called Plaster.

What do you guys think? Do you like matte nail polish?

Nude-Colored Nails: Deborah Lippmann Naked

ALT TEXT
Deborah Lippmann Naked

This color by Deborah Lippmann is exactly like its name, Naked. Sheer enough to look like your natural nail color, but rich with color to not be completely opaque. This is probably my favorite nude-colored nail lacquer next to Estee Lauder Michael Kors Very Hollywood.

Anything better than freshly waxed eyebrows?

Nope. NOTHING. And a just-out-of-the-salon hairdo is a sweet addition too.

Agree?

Nude-Colored Nails: Sally Hansen Terracotta

Sally Hansen Terracottas
Sally Hansen Terracotta

A while ago I did a post on Nude-Colored Nails on Dark Skin, and so many of you loved it! Nude-colored nails are definitely a trend worth trying. Of course it may take a few tries to find the perfect shade, but that's what your big beauty sis (yours truly) is here for.

This week I'll be trying out different shades of nude-colored nail polish. From super light lacquers to polishes with peach and brown undertones, you'll hopefully find something you like!

Today I'm wearing Sally Hansen's Terracotta, which the models sported for Rachel Roy's Fall 2011 show. It's got a peachy camel undertone and I'm not so sure I really like it. What do you think?

Like I said in a previous post, mint is the quintessential summer green nail lacquer. Am I right? Or, am I right?

Been There Done That: Schick Quattro Trim Style Razor and Bikini Trimmer

Schick Quattro Trim Style Razor and Bikini Trimmer
Schick Quattro Trim Style Razor and Bikini Trimmer

A couple weeks ago, one of my friends mentioned she got a Brazilian wax. Intrigued, I asked for more gory details and then immediately asked if she got a Vagina Facial. "A WHAT?!" She responded. I explained that it is basically a facial... for your vagina. It actually sounds quite relaxing and neccessary post waxing/shaving. Especially, if you get those pesky ingrown hairs.

Too cheap for a wax, I purchased the Schick Quattro Trim Style Razor and Bikini Trimmer and went to work. Listen Read here ladies, this is a must-buy if you want to properly groom your lady bits. The battery operated trimmer is waterproof, so you can trim-shave-trim in the shower.

What do you think? Are you a waxer or a shaver? Have you tried the Schick Quattro Trim Style Razor and Bikini Trimmer?

NAILS: Summer Greens - Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Green Tea

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Green Tea

This is one of those nail lacquers that you can't tell if it's in the blue or green family. I'll make the executive decision for all of you: green. It's a very, very. I mean VERY, light mint green. Or, I could just be deceptive because of the name; Green Tea.

So far this week we've seen limeade-green and beachy-green nail polishes. I think this Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Green Tea is the ultimate summer green nail color. It's a twist on the classic mint nail lacquer.

How do you stash your nail polish bottles?

Here's how I used to store my nail polishes:

Here's how I stash 'em now:

Prior to the green boxes, I stuffed all my nail lacquers in a glass bowl. I think the plastic containers are a good upgrade from the green boxes. There's so much room for every single one of my nail polishes babies!!

How do you stash your nail polish bottles?

This nail polish looks like Geese shit, which is funny because it's called Uh-Oh Roll Down The Window. I think it's a perfect summer green. It's a beachy green and great if you want to escape the quintessential mint-esque nail lacquer this season.

Sunday Night Treat: Boscia Pore Purifying Black Strips

Boscia Pore Purifying Black Strips

Sunday nights usually call for an extensive facial regimen. You know, clearing my pores of all that built up gunk. (LOL, gunk is a fun word.) This week I bypassed smearing on one of my masks and went with one of Boscia's Pore Purifying Black Strips. Between this and the regular pore strips, this is the winner. As soon as I remove the strip, I see a difference in my skin in that area. If you get a chance, give it a try! A pack of 6 strips is $15. I know, not cheap. Like most Boscia products, they are slightly expensive but worth the splurge.

I'm still experimenting with plain nails in an effort to purge my nail polish collection. It's not going too well. I want to keep all of my nail lacquers! Anyway, this week I'm playing with Summer Greens. This nail color is Perfect Formulas Jardin. It reminds me of OPI Gargantuan Green Grape, but is a little lighter in shade.

NAILS: A Color Suitable For An Elder Dara

caitlin zoya
Zoya Caitlin

Continuing on my no-design-nails kick, I chose this color I have been meaning to try. I'm wearing Caitlin by Zoya. The color doesn't really suit me. It's too calm of a color, but perfect for a friend of mine that I know is obsessed with purple-blue-gray nail lacquer. It's also a very mature color. Suitable for an elder Dara.

Generic vs Brand Name - Which Do You Buy?

I'm mad. Well, more so annoyed. I wrote about the Nutra Nail Odor Free Non-Damaging Polish Remover a couple weeks ago. I used up the remains of my bottle thinking I could purchase another bottle at my local CVS, Rite Aid, etc., etc. Turns out no store around me carries it. WHAT GIVES?! I had to settle for the store brand biodegradable nail polish remover that has ODOR (seen above) because I like to use a remover that is acetone free.

NEXT, I went searching for a specific shampoo I use called Nizoral. It's a dandruff shampoo I love to use because the relaxing I do to my hair leaves my scalp very dry and flaky. But uh, I refuse to go natural. In one use, my scalp is flake free and moisturized. I searched high and low; I wasted a good hour of my day. It was nowhere to be found in my hometown. Therefore, I settled for the store brand (seen below).

And while I don't normally fret about generic brands (I buy generic ibuprofen, tissues & etc), there are some products I prefer to purchase the trade name. I trust a specific brand's product performance and I know that I am getting my money's worth. I do not adore being forced to use a generic name, because the brand I like is nowhere to be found!

What do you think? Do you care if your product is a brand name or generic? What items do you buy that are generic?

SUMMER SLIMDOWN: Uh... Yoga?

gaiam power yoga
So, I haven't been keeping up with my er Summer Slimdown. I know. Bad Dara, BAD! It turns out that losing weight is actually really hard. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?! I'm learning to take baby steps and that weight will not just "fall off" as said in many weight loss commercials.

This morning, I got up at 5am--OK, 5:30am--and hit the mat. The yoga mat. I only lasted 10 minutes and then decided it was breakfast time. Like I said, baby steps people. BABY-STEPS. My goal tomorrow is to last the a full 30 minutes.

I've come to terms with the fact that it may take me a year to reach my "goal weight"... whatever that is. I don't know. I haven't stepped on a scale since my last check-up. So SUMMER SLIMDOWN may turn into SKINNY-BITCH-MODE.

Any tips my friends?

Do Men Care About Makeup on Women?

dara formal
Snapped @ a formal w/ a friend.
Something one would possibly wear on a date, right?
My bedtime--yes, bedtime--is steadily approaching so I am going to make this quick.

I know I have been blogging infrequently. I apologize. My days have been filled with HTML, sex and more HTML. The new gig got me thinking about men and makeup. Since I've never been on a real date, nor have I dated anyone (middle school doesn't count), I'm not sure I know how to date or how to attract... the opposite sex.

Yes. I'm a 22 year old woman who has never been on a date, had a boyfriend, fallen in-love, etc, etc. BOOHOO. I know what TYPE of man I want. (**Rolls out long list.**) I just don't know how to get him. But as my close girlfriends say, "It'll happen when you least expect it." Cool. I'll just wait like Sleeping Beauty for my Prince Charming to come and kiss me awake. Sounds thrilling.

ANYWAY, the point of this post is makeup and men. I wear makeup for me because I like the way I look, but I can't help but wonder if men care about makeup as well. Many will say, "I love a woman with a natural face." While many women will say, "Well, you don't know what I look like when I first wake up. No. Really. You don't want to know." And while I'm an advocate for using makeup to enhance your beauty and not change your looks, I can't help but wonder if that bold color choice in lipstain I have is a determent to the type of man I want.

I know makeup isn't a key factor in attaining a lover, I'm just really curious as to what men think about makeup a woman wears on a first date or on a date in general.

Goodnight.

When Nail Polish Isn't The Color It Should Be

China Glaze Papaya Punch
China Glaze Papaya Punch

I'm kind of disappointed in the color hue of this nail polish. I thought it would be more canary yellow. The bottle looks orange in the picture, but in real-life, it's a very yellowy orange. I feel like I have Nickelodeon slime all over my nails. Either way, I still love me some China Glaze.

Has that every happened to you? Expect a certain color when applying your nail lacquer and you end up with a totally different shade of whatever-the-color? Ugh.

Taking A New Direction

ALT TEXT
When this blog started, it was strictly for women of color since I am one. Then, swarms of my non-brown-skinned friends told me they loved the blog and looked at it for great advice.

Months later, it has hit me. Beauty is not discriminatory. Therefore, my blog is taking a new direction. It will still be called Dark Berry Beauty because I am a dark berry, but a lot of my content will now not only adhere to my fellow sistahs, but my fellow beautiful young women around the globe.

To take a step in this direction, I will soon be featuring one of my good friends who is currently a beauty assistant at a big magazine. I can't wait to see what her Glamourous take will bring to the beauty conversation on this here bloggy blog.

Trying Something New This Summer w/ My Nails

OPI Gargantuan Green Grape
OPI Gargantuan Green Grape

I think I'm going to take on a new nail challenge. While I often spruce up my nails with glitter, gems and etc., I never ever just wear the nail lacquer plain. So. For the rest of summer, I am going to do just that. I have so many nail polishes I have never worn, including the one pictured above. It is time I test those bad boys out. By the end of August, I'll see which ones I don't really like and give them away. So stay tuned!! Free nail polish coming your way very soon!!

I really like this color. It's not a mint and it's not quite a lime green. I'm not sure what type of green this is. According to OPI, it's Gargantuan Green Grape.
