BEAUTY SECRETS REVEALED: Emily Gaynor, Glamour magazine Freelance Beauty Assistant

Emily Gaynor

I first met Emily two years ago when we were both interning at Teen Vogue. We bumped into each other while leaving the S/S 2010 Cynthia Rowley show where a reporter asked us for our opinion on the collection. Simultaneously, we uttered the same words. Ding! Did we just become best friends?! Yes.

Emily is a recent grad, a Freelance Beauty Assistant at Glamour magazine... and a close friend. So since DBB is taking a new direction, I thought it would be great to interview my girl Em (a total beauty buff) about her beauty secrets. It was also an excuse to have a girl-date.

BEAUTY BEGINNINGS
"My mom is actually who got me into beauty. We used to go to the makeup counters at Neiman Marcus and I would get my makeup done. And when I was 12, my mom bought me the Bobbi Brown book which she got signed by Bobbi Brown. I then became obsessed with two products. One was this purplish Bobbi Brown lip gloss that almost all of my friends had. It was an iridescent purple, which I am sure they still have because it was in the Permanent Collection. The other product I was obsessed with was Clinique’s Black Honey lipstick, which they are going to re-launch! I just remember being young and my mother telling me, “This looks good on everyone.” I took her word for it."

UNMASKED
"I never thought beauty editorial was an option. I thought that if you worked in a magazine it meant fashion. When I got to Teen Vogue, I was interning in production. I would always peeking into beauty and it just seemed like so much fun with all of the products and the blogging."

MORNING MAKEUP
"I usually wear a tinted moisturizer or bronzer. I don’t really use foundation and if I do, it will be Maybelline’s Dream Matte Mousse. I love the way it feels! And I recently learned the importance of primer, thanks to Sonia Kashuk. I never thought it was anything necessary in my makeup routine, but it really does keep my makeup fresh and on my face for a long time. I also wear eyeliner and bright lipstick. I know that’s not something you should do during the daytime, but I can’t help it. I am hopelessly addicted to wearing too much eyeliner and red lipstick. Right now I'm really into matte lipsticks, but I hate the way it makes my lips feel. My lips are always dry, so I have to put on a lipbalm before I apply my lipstick."

NIGHT TIME
"I actually don't wash my face before I go to bed. I sleep with my makeup on. I'm lucky that I don't really breakout. Watch, I probably just jinxed myself."

HAIR TALK
"I really like ombré hair. I did it last summer, but now it's such a trend. I really want to try blue ombré, but I think you have to have blonde hair to do it. If you have dark hair, you have to bleach it first and then you put the blue in... and I don't want to go blonde."

SECRET SIGNATURE SCENT?
"There's this oil I use that's from Indiana. It's called Ambre Oil. I think it's the best smelling thing in the world, but the weird thing about it is that some people can't smell it at all."
