Sleep Apnea Stories: I have to sleep with a mask?

sleep apnea mask

A couple weeks ago, I had my second sleep study. I slept with the mask pictured above.

When the technician first placed the mask on my face, I went into panic mode. I felt like I couldn't breathe and I thought I was going to die. I know. I'm dramatic. She told me to relax and turned on the machine (CPAP), which the mask was attached to. Turns out, the CPAP shoots out oxygen to keep air flowing through my lungs as I sleep. After a night's rest, I loved it. I felt refreshed and wide awake. Until I am able to lose weight and get rid of the fat on my neck that is basically constricting my air path as I sleep, I'll be using the CPAP.

Now, I won't be sleeping with a mask. My doc ordered a machine with two tubes that I'll stick up my nose. Much more efficient than a mask.

Good news, my sleep apnea isn't that bad. I'm just happy to take care of my health now while I'm young and have health insurance. Seriously. I went a couple years without it (HELLO, broke college kid) and will never take it for granted ever again.
