TRY IT: A Shot of Broccoli in The Morning

broccoli shot Raw Broccoli has 135 percent Vitamin C and 4 percent Iron.

Yesterday morning I decided to use my juicer and make a shot. For some reason I thought it would give me energy and boost my iron intake for the day. Being that I'm Anemic and etc., I need as much iron in my system as I can get. The broccoli shot was chased with a 16 oz. glass of 2 oranges, 2 red delicious apples, and 6 carrots. 'Twas delish.

Mistakes To Not Make on A Juice Cleanse

After my juice cleanse failed miserably, I realized the mistakes I made. And now that I know where I went wrong, I won't let it happen again. Here's where I failed:

1. I didn't ease myself into the cleanse. I started cold turkey. The night before, I stuffed my face with all types of finger food from a New Year’s Eve party. "I'm starting a cleanse tomorrow, so I can eat all I want," I told my friends. The next day, food was all I could think about.

2. I didn't drink enough water. Even though I was guzzling nutrient-rich juice, I forgot to chug tons of water. Water not only fills you up, but it also helps flush impurities out of the body. Because I wasn't drinking enough water, I frequently succumbed to feelings of hunger.

3. I didn't drink enough juice. Fruits and vegetables are very expensive. I would spend $60 at the grocery store for two days worth of juice supplies. So, to weaken the financial blow, I would sip two juices a day instead of the suggested three to five — about 40 ounces instead of 120. Combined with too little water, this was a recipe for disaster.

Take my advice and go forward with your cleansing my loves.

juice recipe
1 box of strawberries
1 box of blueberries
1 box of blackberries

The last time I concocted up some juice was about a month ago. This means my fruit/veggies had been sitting in the fridge for a couple weeks. To stop them from going bad, I grabbed my berries and made a drink I'll call Berry Blast! Exclamation point necessary. I think I'll add an apple, a lemon or grapes next time. The taste was a little more on the tart side...and I like my drinks sweeeeeeet!

I Made A Yummy Iron Rich Drink!

iron rich juice for juice cleanse
I'm incorporating fresh juice into my life as I mentioned before. Yesterday I missed my Bikram yoga class and was a little upset about it so I made this iron rich juice I'll call Broccoli Mon (pictured left). It's probably a great drink for me to sip because it'll help me fight my Anemia.

Here are the ingredients:
3 giant broccoli stalks
2 green apples
1 lemon
1" ginger
A lot of you have been wondering how I know what juices to make. I don't really, but I've had so many juice mixes that I know what will taste good together. I've also learned that certain fruits make your juice taste sweeter or tangier. Lemon is one that will make it sweet but tangy and grapes or any berry will make your juice sweet. Berries are great super fruits. The darker the berry, the more oxidants that berry has. Nonetheless, Broccoli Mon is a hit!

Oh so yummy in my tummy.

The juice cleanse is back on! Sort of.

fruit and veggies
After pushing my juice cleanse to a halt, I've decided to resuscitate the liquid diet.

I will be eating regularly. It's just that once I went off the juice cleanse, I noticed that the uncontrollable itching caused by Anemia worsen. Sipping fresh fruit and vegetable juice made my skin stop itching. I don't now what the connection is, but I am going to return to drinking fresh juice everyday at least twice a day.

Only good can come out of this.

Juice Cleanse; Day 12 - Coming To A Halt

After talking to some supportive friends, my juice cleanse is coming to a halt. Why? TMI ALERT! I'm concerned that I haven't been pooping. Yup. I'm a girl who loves to take her daily dumps. Before the juice cleanse, I was shitting at least twice a day. On the cleanse, I shoot a poop probably once every two days. I'm going to still be juicing, but I think I might go back to eating regular meals. I'll devote my meals to healthy dishes.

For those who call this quitting, I don't really look at it that way. Have you done a cleanse? No? That's what I thought. You can't say I didn't try. I really did. Well, I think buying a juicer was the best thing I could have ever done for my health. I'm only going to drink fresh juice from now on. Sorry Tropicana.

Juice Cleanse; Day 11 - Making Some Modifications

Today was a good day. Had a drink in the morning I'll call Splash of Spinach.

2 green apples
1 honey crisp apple
1/3 of a cucumber
2 giant handful of spinach leaves

I've decided to start having an iron-rich drink in the morning. It's usually the nasty tasting vegetables so I figured why not get it over and done with in the morning. The rest of the day I drank a very sweet concoction that I'll call Sweet Surprise.

1 mango
8 strawberries
2 handfuls of red grapes
2 red delicious apples
2 carrots
1 tomato

I also had lunch today. On a cleanse you're allowed to eat. You just have to eat the right foods. Zucchini is on that list of foods you can eat, so I went with Zucchini and brown rice. The portion was small and I was satisfied afterwards. I think I might just start eating for one meal and juicing the rest. Then eventually, I think I will be strong enough to juice all day, every day.

Today I learned red grapes and strawberries make your juice super sweet. Mmm.

Juice Cleanse; Day 10 - Three Words: Baked By Melissa

When I got into work today, a box of these were delivered to me. WHO SENDS CUPCAKES AT 10AM?!?! It was all downhill from there because resisting Baked By Melissa mini cupcakes is pretty much committing a sin.

I did go to yoga after work and I think I fell asleep. I started snoring and woke myself up! I'm going again every night this week. This should be a great detoxifying week. I also noticed a place a block away from my office makes fresh juice. This is awesome! Now I can have fresh juice as I head home.

Juice Cleanse; Day 9 - Let's Press Restart

I ate a lot today. A lot of bad stuff. A lot of chocolate chip cookies and etc. Tomorrow I am pressing restart on this cleanse. It's also my first night of Bikram Yoga NYC. It's going down. I reserved a spot in the class and it is happening. Reboot cleanse in full effect tomorrow.

I will not give up!!!

Juice Cleanse; Day 8 - I Ate All Weekend

It was light, but I ate. I also didn't eat the right stuff. Sigh. Tomorrow is a new day and I think I have found a veggie juice I like.
2 carrots
1 lemon
1 mango
2 oranges
1 tomato
My period also came which is a sign the cleanse is working because as you know, my period has been the despise of my womanhood. I think this cleanse thing is doing me good. Now, I just need to dig deep and pull out willpower so that it's only water or fresh juice and fruit/veggies for the next 22 days so I can truly reap the amazing benefits of this fast.

Juice Cleanse; Day 7 - Fail

I'm ready to give up, but I've never been a quitter. I thought that I would try and just drink water today and eat vegetables for dinner, but my father (read: recent college grad living at home) insisted on making me fish for dinner. Sigh. I ate the fish and then ate everything else I could get my hands on. I'm not proud... again. But my friend Christina Ly says doing 3 days of good cleansing is a lot. However, I'm not convinced. Damn it. I will get through these 30 days juicing if I have to rip a baby's arm off (too morbid?).

It was all downhill when my personal trainer canceled on me today because it's his birthday and his family surprised him with a party. Womp. Anyway, tomorrow I'm going to bikram yoga (for real) with one of my best girlfriends and I should be able to get back on my juice track.

Juice Cleanse; Day 6 - I Ate and I'm Not Proud

Well, I never said I would be perfect throughout this cleanse. I do promise I will be honest about my experience. This thing is hard. However, I realize that I need to stick with it because today I briskly walked to work from the subway and didn't feel like death. After work—I was there late—I grabbed a handful of graham cracker sticks from the free table and then went to the vegetarian spot across the street. I figured if I was going to eat I might as well eat vegetarian. I had fries and ordered a potato and spinach burger. After the fries I was feeling queasy. Took a couple bites of my burger and stopped. I felt guilty. I'm not eating clean and properly cleansing my body, but damn it I missed food! AND YOU KNOW WHAT?! SHOVING THOSE GRAHAM CRACKER STICKS AND FRIES INTO MY MOUTH IN MY MOUTH FELT GOOOOOOOOOOOD!

But that's my problem. Food does too much for me and I am trying to break this hold it has on my mind, body and soul. I'm juicing all day tomorrow, going to Bikram Yoga and I've got an hour session with my personal trainer. Pretty extreme, but in my world it's go hard or go home.

I will get back on track. I will get back on track.

Juice Cleanse: Day 5 - I'm Going To Eat Fruits and Veggies

I didn't think it was possible that I could actually lose weight, but I lost 5 lbs. That's 5 lbs is 5 days! I had been eating right and going to the gym since August but couldn't drop a pound. This juice fast seems to be just what I need. I will say that I've noticed that I'm a little constipated, so I must not be drinking enough water. I have another confession. I ate some mango tonight and a banana last night. I did some research on Reboot Your Life and learned that it's okay to eat raw or cooked vegetables and fruits while juicing. Therefore, I might start doing that. It's still a cleanse... right?

Aside from the minute constipation, I feel absolutely great! I'm not dizzy nor do I get headaches or shakes or anything. I do get a little hungry every now and then, but then I drink some water or juice and the need for food is gone.

My main goal with this cleanse is not only to lose weight, but become more healthy. I'm going to the doctor's on Monday and going to ask for a (rapid?) blood test to check out how the fast might be affecting my blood. Climbing stairs are beginning to feel less like a chore—thanks Anemia—so the cleanse must be helping!

Juice Cleanse: Day 4 - Bananas Don't Juice

Lunch and snack.
So remember when I told you about my strawberry, banana and red grape concoction? Turns out the reason it was so yummy was because bananas don't juice.

Tonight I put my last banana in the juicer to make a sweet "dinner" of banana, strawberries and grapes, but the banana didn't juice; I know so because I put it in the juicer first. It shot straight to peel collector. Womp.

Needless to say, today was another successful day of straight juicing! I stepped on the scale just for pure curiosity and I'm 2 pounds lighter! I think I can do this! I just hope I don't go broke. Buying fresh produce twice a week is kind of pricey.

So that's 2 pounds in technically 2 days because day 1 and 2 I ate. The first day I lost it at night. I was shoving bread with Nutella into my mouth. The next day I had some beans and rice and day 3 was when I decided enough was enough and that I needed to get serious. Success! As Nemo would say, just keep swimming, swimming. In my case, I'll just keep drinking, drinking...

Juice Cleanse: Day 3 - I Survived A Work Day

Today, I didn't eat... technically. When I came home from work at 8pm I had a banana, but that's still on the good "food" list so it doesn't count... right? Either way, I'm proud of myself for sticking to the juice cleanse today. I survived my first work day back from the New Year vacation. I also had a productive day, so I think I can do this. I can do this.

This morning I had grapple juice; a mixture of red grapes and gale apples. Then for lunch/snack I had a modified Mean Green juice; a mixture of kale, cucumber, a lemon and red grapes because I ran out of apples. I also realized my Mean Green was totally wrong after I witnessed the video below of Joe Cross. I was missing the spinach and ginger.

I didn't add ginger to any of my juices because I couldn't find it in the grocery store. Haha! Turns out it's a key factor in helping me shit my brains out. Yay! I found the ginger tonight, but two grocery stores ran out of fresh kale and spinach. What gives? I'm not buying anything bagged. I shall try again tomorrow, but looks like I'll be having a modified Sunset or Mean Green. Sunset is ginger, carrots, orange, red apples and red tomatoes... I think.

I also peed 15 times today. No. Joke. I know that within a half hour of sipping on my juice, I will be in the bathroom releasing a waterfall. Anyone else have this problem?

Juice Cleanse: Day 2 - It's Not Easy

I caved. Last night I had a couple pieces of bread. Today, I had a couple pieces of meat. THIS. IS. NOT. EASY.

But I am sticking to this juice cleanse. I am determined to make it to 30 days with less than 10% of the days spent cheating. Tomorrow I will not be cheating. Tomorrow I will not be cheating.

This morning I had a mango, orange, and tangerine juice. Later on I had a strawberry, banana and grape juice. The latter drink was rather yummy. I hate the mix of strawberry and banana, but with the added taste of grape, it was exceptionally delicious. For "dinner" I will be having a 24 oz. concoction made up of 1/3 cucumber, 1 lemon, 1 green apple, 1 gale apple, bunches of kale and bunches of lettuce.

I haven't really felt faint or dizzy. I've just felt hungry. I also haven't been blowing up the toilet with my feces, which I'm upset about. Haha! I've been peeing a lot though. Tomorrow I go back to work after a 3-day weekend, so we shall see how this juice cleanse affects my work habit. I have a feeling it won't.

Juice Cleanse: Day 1 - Everyone's A Critic

jack lalanne power juice

My juice cleanse/reboot has officially begun. I didn't mean to start it on the first day of the New Year, but it happened that way. You see, I bought a juicer last Tuesday and was ready to start my cleanse. Then I took the juicer out of the box. It was broken! Grr. The next time that was convenient for me to get a new one was on Friday. I then went to a New Year's Eve party last night and well, had my last food feast.

Everyone that I've told has something to say about my cleanse. From that I'm crazy to I have to eat at least once a day, I've heard it all. No. I'm not crazy. I've decided that I need this cleanse. I'm young and not letting my health/weight get in the way of me living. Food is my crutch and it's time I throw it away. I want to be healthy and enjoy the life I live. Don't get me wrong. I love my life, but I think post-cleanse it'll improve immensely.

I woke up today at around noon (haha, it was a long night), and had my first glass of juice at 2pm. It was freshly squeezed apple juice. It's amazing how fresh apple juice tastes so much better than concentrated apple juice.

Tonight my "dinner" will be green juice that includes celery, cucumbers, lemons, and granny smith apples.

By the way, I went with the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer Express out of convenience. So far it's been good. It's quick and takes out all the pulp. Although, I enjoy pulp. It gives the extra fiber I love. However, I think this might make the juicer last longer because the skins aren't clogging up the machine.

Watching Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead Changed My Life

fat sick and nearly dead
A while ago, a good friend suggested I watch a movie called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Not ashamed of my body image issues and constant search to be healthiest I can be, I put that movie on my must-watch list.

Last night I finally watched it and I am so happy I did. I've heard of juice cleanses, but never actually witnessed someone go through it. I always thought they were crock shit and just something celebrities did to get fit for a role.

In this movie, Joe Cross goes on a journey to reboot his health. He drinks nothing but fruit/veggie juice that he blended for 90 days! I watched him go from taking almost 10 different type of medications daily to control his autoimmune disease, to taking nothing. Obviously he can't drink juice for the rest of his life, so after he was done, he changed the way he ate. Eating more micronutrients: vegetables, fruit, nuts and beans.

Tomorrow night I am going out and getting myself a juice blender and then hitting up the grocery store for fresh fruit and veggies. I can't wait until the New Year to start my juice cleanse. I need to start it immediately!! It's important to consult a doctor before doing a cleanse, but I'm not. I've been to so many doctors lately that I'm well aware of what my health looks like and what my "numbers" are. I'm aiming for healthy and skinny. My doc took one look at my neck and was like, "You have a fat neck that needs to go." And it will be gone.
